We've included videos of VR gamers enjoying the series throughout this article so you can see what all the hype is about. Plus, read all the way to the end for other titles from developers we love to fill out your VR library.
What is I Expect You To Die?
If you're just learning about this series for the first time, I Expect You To Die is a three-game series that puts you in the role of a secret agent as you defuse bombs, defeat evil henchmen, and save the world, all from the comfort of your chair.
This awarded game series is known for bringing the escape room concept to life in a trope-loving spy setting with the added twist of telekinesis to control objects and puzzle solve. Add in incredible voice acting, powerhouse music, and jaw-dropping opening cinematics, and you have the recipe to why this series is so beloved in the VR community and beyond.
Jump in Anywhere
While I Expect You To Die is a series, the games do not need to be played in order! Each tells a complete story and can be enjoyed fully without knowing what happens in the other games.
Feel free to start with whatever game grabs you the most, and switch between games if you get stuck on a puzzle! Regardless, by the end you'll still be a super spy and know all the lore that makes these games so beloved.
Learning the Basics of VR
One of the many reasons I Expect You To Die is a must buy virtual reality game is because of how easy and intuitive the controls are. You'll be completing secret agent missions all from the comfort of a seated position. There's no complex movement or control schemes to master, and all objects can be seen and interacted with via easy movements of your torso and neck.
Within a few minutes, a short tutorial will have you expertly grabbing and manipulating objects to start your puzzle-solving journey to super spy success. Because of the simple, intuitive movement and gameplay, this is also a perfect game to start with if you're concerned about motion sickness.
Perfect for Families and Social Play
The easy-to-learn controls and spy theme made the I Expect You To Die series an instant hit in my household. Anyone can pick up and play, and the puzzle-solving element make coming up with clever solutions a family affair.
For the best experience, I recommend using the Meta Horizon app to cast your Quest 3S's picture to your phone and smart TV. This turns the normally solo VR game into family game night, and my kids (ages 8 and 9) love yelling out new things to try and roaring with laughter as they blow themselves up in exciting new ways.
And you can enjoy I Expect You To Die as a date night or social game too even without kids. Challenge your friends to solve puzzles as fast as they can or pass the headset after every death to really make your next get-together one to remember.
Speedrunning, Secrets, & Souvenirs
Ok, so you've completed all the missions and saved the day. Time to move on, right Agent?
Don't hit your ejector seat just yet, because there's still so much to do! I Expect You To Die is a favorite of the speedrunning community as they master their routes to complete missions in seconds instead of minutes. My kids are doing the same as they replay missions to see who can complete each the fastest and set the new family record.
Even for the most casual gamers, there's a lot of replayability here. Each level has multiple ways to solve puzzles, hidden interactions that unlock souvenirs in your Agent's office, and hidden lines of dialogue you can only uncover by trying some of the wildest solutions possible.
When you've done everything, head to the I Expect You To Die Discord, packed with Agents discussing in-game lore, sharing tips and tricks and competing in community competitions to win exclusive prize items. Join this supportive, welcoming community now and live in the world of I Expect You To Die long after you complete the games.
